A Student Perspective
February 02, 2024
This past week, we celebrated National Catholic Schools Week. As part of our National Catholic Schools Week celebration, we offered our students the opportunity to provide a reflection on what Lasallian Catholic education means to them. Here are a few quotes from their submissions:
God has shown his path for me and I have chosen to trust in him and know that no matter what he will always be there guiding me. ~Sophie Brewster
Everyday you learn about the goodness of God and how he loves you. ~Nola Harmon
Teachers not only teach the students subjects such as English, social studies, math, science writing, art, religion, and health, but they also teach us how to be brothers. ~Flynn Johnston
[Lasallain education] adds purpose to my life and makes me an all-around happier person. ~Henry Ezzo
A Lasallian school does its best to help others. ~Jordan Wanjale
At CBA we have been taught to be the best we can be and to always do the right thing. ~Caroline Wilson
In addition to these quotes, senior Ryan Storie offered a valued reflection as a student from another faith background.
Embarking on my educational journey at a Lasallian Catholic school has been a profound experience that transcended religious boundaries. As a Jewish student, I initially approached the Lasallian environment at CBA with mild curiosity and a lot of apprehension. However, the values imparted through a Lasallian Catholic education have proven to be universally relevant, fostering a sense of community, compassion, and intellectual growth.
At the core of my transformative journey within the Lasallian Catholic educational setting at Christian Brothers Academy is a profound commitment to fostering community and inclusivity. This commitment, guided by the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, extends beyond mere coexistence, shaping both the academic landscape and my broader perspective on communal living. The academy's walls witness a living entity, dynamically shaped by the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of its students. As a Jewish student entering this predominantly Catholic environment, I initially harbored reservations about how my religious identity would align with that of the school. However, what unfolded surpassed expectations, evolving into a tapestry of understanding that opened my eyes in many ways. Daily interactions and collaborative learning in the classroom highlighted the strength derived from diversity, broadening the scope of collective knowledge and fostering intellectual richness. The emphasis on shared values and mutual respect cultivated a supportive atmosphere, where each student feels encouraged to express their unique identity without fear of judgment. The inclusive nature of the Lasallian educational philosophy not only allowed me to embrace my Jewish heritage but also facilitated the celebration of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
Another cornerstone of a Lasallian Catholic education is the dedication to service and social justice. This commitment to service is deeply ingrained in the school's ethos and is manifested through various initiatives and outreach programs. Engaging in these service-learning experiences has been a transformative aspect of my educational journey. Through participating in community service, I've witnessed firsthand the positive impact it can have on both individuals and the broader community. The Lasallian emphasis on social justice extends beyond theoretical discussions, prompting students to actively contribute to addressing societal issues. These experiences have broadened my worldview and reinforced the importance of compassion and empathy in effecting positive change. I have found resonance with the universal principles of justice and charity promoted by Lasallian education, aligning with my own beliefs about making a positive impact on society. This commitment to service has not only enriched my academic experience but has also instilled a sense of responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of the world around me. In essence, the Lasallian dedication to service and social justice serves as a guiding light, inspiring students to become compassionate and socially aware individuals.
My journey at CBA has been truly enlightening, revealing the universal importance of a Lasallian Catholic education. The emphasis on community, inclusivity, service, and justice has not only enriched my academic experience but also contributed to my personal growth. The values instilled in this educational environment extend beyond religious affiliations, creating a foundation for understanding, empathy, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
Thank you to all of our students who provided a reflection during National Catholic Schools Week. I will highlight one more student in Reme Kucera who concluded her poem by offering the advice, “Be the one who takes on the challenge, the one who doesn't let anything stop you.” May Lasallian Catholic schools continue to be blessed with people who take on the challenge of finding God in all of the crevices of the earth, the challenge of a relentless thirst for knowledge, and the challenge of building fraternity through love and compassion for all whom we encounter. Happy National Catholic Schools Week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Matthew Keough
